I am a postdoctoral researcher at theSystems Medicine and Bioinformatics Laboratoryfrom the Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute (Melbourne, Australia) and associated with the Méric Labfrom the University of Bath (UK). My current research involves the analysis of markers of incident cardiovascular disease in people with type 2 diabetes, and building models that turn those markers into risk scores.

Biography
I grew up in the South Region of Brazil and began my undergraduate studies in Biotechnology at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) in 2012. Within my first months on campus, I joined a microbiology wet lab working on plant growth-promoting bacteria. I went on to complete an MSc (2017) and PhD (2021) in Genetics and Molecular Biology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (PPGBM/UFRGS), the country’s oldest and one of the most recognised postgraduate programmes in the field.
At UFRGS, I worked with the SEMIA Culture Collection (>1,200 agriculturally important bacterial strains used as plant inoculants that underpin Brazil’s successful crop-inoculation programme) and shifted decisively into computational biology, focusing on bacterial genomics. During my PhD, I secured support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s GEBA-IV initiative to sequence the collection’s common-bean strain subset.
From 2019 to 2022 I co-founded and co-led Agrega Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento em Biotecnologia, building (meta)genomics and (meta)barcoding workflows and winning competitive innovation grants, before returning to curiosity-driven research. In 2022 I moved to New York as a postdoctoral fellow at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and in 2023 was recruited to the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, where I spent almost four years working on the human microbiome and its links to health in large population cohorts.
Since August 2026 I have been in the Systems Medicine and Bioinformatics Laboratory at the Baker Institute. My scope has widened beyond metagenomics to identifying lipidomics, metabolomics, proteomics and other markers of incident cardiovascular disease in people with type 2 diabetes, and building models that turn those markers into risk scores. The constant across all of it is large, deeply phenotyped human cohorts and the computational methods needed to make sense of them. I hold honorary appointments with the University of Melbourne, Monash University, the University of Bath (UK) and the University of Turku (Finland), and maintain collaborations in Brazil, Sweden, Finland and Austria.
